Re: So My Dog Bite My Neighbour A little
A wolf hybrid is NOT A BREED. It is a cross and does not breed true. A BREED will breed true. Labrador X Labrador will produce consistent Labrador puppies. A dog(of any breed) bred with a wolf will create a mix. If you take a brother and sister of that litter and breed them together, the puppies will not be like the parents(will not breed true), even though the parents were siblings. The genes will be all over the place, as they are in any cross breeding. Labradoodle is not a breed - nor is any other cross. It does not breed true. In California, you cannot have a 50/50 wolf/dog cross(F1). You can have pups from F1 parents, though. There are more people that have Husky/Malamute mixes and are TOLD that they have wolf dogs - than people that actually have wolf dogs. Unless you KNOW what the parents are(not just told) and SEE the parents breed - you will not know for sure, unless it comes out looking like a wolf. Wolves do NOT look like dogs and they do not act like them. Dogs are attracted to people and wolves shy away from them. Crossing these animals can create an animal with both of these qualities and that causes internal conflict(instability). Wolfdogs may be more trainable than wolves, but that means they can be LESS trainable than a domestic dog. They are NOT dogs and shouldn't be treated as such. They have unique needs that most people cannot properly provide. |

Re: So My Dog Bite My Neighbour A little
The Veterinarians where I live will not give rabies shots to dogs that have a certain percentage wolf in them. My brother found that out when a White dog with a very distinct "wolf" looking face came up and he took it to the vet. Vet said it had I believe 50% wolf, so no rabies shots. sucks, it was a beautiful dog.

Yep. And it's not even that the shots don't work on wolves(they do). It's that the shots have never been officially tested on wolves. They take many (50? 100? More?) wolves, give them the vaccine and then infect them ALL with rabies. Then they destroy them all and test their brains. |
