Russia - Krokodil Aftermath
Desomorphine, Deza, Kocodile. A homemade drug based on codeine-containing preparations sold in pharmacies in the early 2000s. The photo shows the results of systematic use, some achieved such results in a few months.

Re: Russia - Krokodil Aftermath
I decided to look more into this as I found it fascinating that a drug can cause the flesh to rot, even beyond the injection site. There's a lot of information out there, but what I have found, is that the drug itself is only part codeine; the rest being, gasoline, paint thinner, ethanol alcohol, iodine, hydrochloric acid, and red phosphorus. Krokodil can be all, or any mix of the ingredients above. It is also produced in very dirty, unsanitary conditions, with some parts of the process requiring a cook to manually blow the contents through a filter by mouth. The cooking process is naturally riddled with bacteria. Suffice to say, the highly acidic nature of this mix causes erosion to the very nature of the skin cells it passes through, and compromises the production of keratin, and muscular/connective tissue. This seems to be what causes the skin to flake and split, and then be unable to heal; the actual cells that are responsible for producing tissues (both normally and as a healing response) are compromised. There also seems to be a major likelihood of blood vessel obstruction, which as far as I understand, means the vessel is prematurely rupturing and seeping the acidic fluid underneath the skin, where it then continues to decay both upwards to the surface layer of skin, and to the surrounding area to the internal spill (once again, due to the damage to the body's ability to produce skin cells and any connective/healing materials) continues to melt, or rot. Why? I found myself asking, as I'm sure many of you are too. Allegedly, Krokodil feels almost indistinguishable from heroin. Knowing this, the average hit of heroin costs around $20, whereas a hit of Krokodil is between $2-5 on average. So you're getting around 5-10x the amount of highs, for the same price. The average life expectancy of a Krokodil user is 2-3 years, due to the inevitable, and unmanageable infection, and sepsis that occurs. Somehow, users do not seem to be bothered or care about this fact or absolute promise of a slow and very painful death. Weird world we live in. Hope you guys found my little talk as interesting as it was for me to research! |
