This specimen shows two grossly enlarged kidneys removed from a patient with adult polycystic kidney disease (an inherited condition).  This specimen shows a lung severely affected by tuberculosis (caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis), resulting in cavity formation, fibrosis and "caseation" (cheesy white areas of necrosis) in the upper lobe.  This specimen shows a heart opened to show the mitral valve, between the left atrium and ventricle. The mitral valve has been infected by a virulent form of bacteria (infective endocarditis). The acute inflammation caused by the infection resulted in the formation of a "vegetation" on the valve, comprised of a mixture of thrombus ("blood clot"), bacteria and inflammatory cells.  · |

stuffed the above post - grr edit should be allowed!  This specimen shows the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. There is a large, cystic tumour of one ovary This specimen shows a smoker's lung with cystic spaces (emphysema) due to destruction of airsac walls.  |

Too graphic for here? Medical nudity is permitted, if that is what you mean.  The rotted vaginal area was pretty bad, but, I found the military hospital much worse! |
