Just because we have opposable thumbs does not make us better than animals. Animals kill for food or to survive, most humans kill for the sake of killing and if we were really smart we would use our evolved brains to get the concept that killing doesn't solve anything.
I would go out of my way to save an animal, unfortunately I can't guarantee I would do the same for a human. It would depend.
Animals aren't dumb, humans are, and we are also too dumb to know it.
