Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

Not stupid sister. I took classic at Empowered K9 Training before I bought my dog. My daughter was 3 years old. Best class I ever took. Was worth the money

http://www.empoweredk9.com/
Had a bit of a look at that website, and there were a couple of things that made me pause. Like this, for instance, in regards to remote e-collars, which they say "is not a shock collar":

Whether used as an early intervention training method for puppies (imagine avoiding behavioral issues altogether!)
This is a big NO for me when it comes to puppy training. Aversive behaviour training methods using a shock-collar (yes, an e-collar IS a shock collar) should only be applied if appropriate shaping techniques that don't use such don't work; young dogs with underlying anxiety conditions with even the mildest of aversive techniques can fall apart REALLY quickly.

I just hope the folks who run that place are aware of that, and are savvy enough to pick which dogs are appropriate for e-training, and which ones aren't, and using the appropriate level of stimulis.

(Personally, the only times I've used e-training is when the dog is completely and utterly unresponsive to the usual training methods which are less invasive. In total, I've had three dogs out of hundreds I've rescued and re-trained that have required me to use an e-collar. It mostly goes unused.)

So much ignorance about pit bulls and other dog breeds in this thread. It's sad.

Why would someone choose a pit bull over a German shepherd? It's just to show off like a kid...

Keep the videos coming.

Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

God damn I fucking HATE these dogs with a passion. Round where I live its always scally mutants who have them urgh....do the world a favour and put down these dogs and their empty-headed owners. Ugly fucking mutts, I would happily shoot one of these fuckers with my crossbow. And I dont give a FUCK about "theyre nice dogs, ooh blame the deed not the breed, hes a lovely dog, wonderful temperament, really good with kids" BULLSHIT. I dont give a FUCK how "good with the kids" these mutts are, they can turn on a fucking penny, with disastrous consequences. Yes I know other breeds can also "turn" but these fuckers, which are basically mongrel breeds, with all kinds of weird genes, have much more of a proclivity towards displaying aggressive behaviour than other breeds. They were bred for FIGHTING in a PIT for fucks sake!!!!!!!!! Rant over; (braces oneself for the avalanche of pro-pit comments).

FYI. The innocent dog heard her screaming and was there to protect the children. The dog was near the grandmother and children when she became hysterical and the dog did what is was suppose to do by nature. PROTECT. I hope the family didn't have the dog put to sleep.

Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

Here is a dog showing a classic pit bull trait, going for the face of the victim. This is what pit bulls were bred for, and one of the reasons they are so dangerous. After reading the details of this dog it is nothing short of miraculous that he didn't go after one of the children.
It is obvious he thought he was protecting the children! Again blame this one on the ignorance of dog owners!

Blanket statement is incorrect.

Why does anyone choose one type of dog over another?

All different reasons.

I've been around GSD's and I prefer Pit Bulls.
They're both intelligent, strong dog breeds. I'm not looking to impress anyone.

I've seen idiots who buy a GSD to look cool. The dog often ends up being an unstable asshole when the person doesn't know what they're doing.

Any dog breed that seen as powerful will attract idiots.
