This was a common side effect of the drug thalidomide - a weak sedative used during the 1950s and 60s. It was often given to pregnant women to help with morning sickness, which is why there's so many pictures of people born with the deformity. Genetics can also play a role in being born with the condition.

I think in Holland the drug was called Softenon. A lot of kids my age had these problems, as pregnant women were given the drug, without knowing the consequences. I'm glad I got spared!

i think this disorder is caused by a certain drug taken during pregnancy. its rare because people are more aware now.

How do any of them wipe their ass? I also don't get how the kid with the boxing glove arms does anything with them. They are not attached to his flippers.
