Former UFC competitor War Machine received a life sentence Monday, with the possibility of parole after 36 years, for assaulting his ex-girlfriend and a companion of hers. The 35-year-old went by his birth name, Jonathan Koppenhaver, during his trial, which took place in March and ended with him being convicted on 29 of 34 charges, including sexual assault and kidnapping.

The ruling Monday, by Clark County (Nev.) District Court judge Elissa Cadish, means that Koppenhaver will be 71 before he can have his first parole hearing. Koppenhaver’s ex-girlfriend, former porn actress Christy Mack, had testified that his violence against her increased over the course of their 15-month relationship, culminating in an August 2014 attack which left her with a fractured eye socket, a broken nose, missing teeth, leg injuries and a lacerated liver.

Mack, whose real name is Christine Mackinday, spoke at Monday’s sentencing hearing and told the court that she was afraid Koppenhaver, if he did not get a lengthy term, would kill her when he got out of jail. She had cited death threats he made against her during his trial, which also featured testimony from Corey Thomas, the man prosecutors said she was with when the ex-MMA star burst in on them.

“I would really like to say to everyone that they can trust in the justice system,” Mackinday said (via MMA Fighting). “I want them to know that there is justice out there.”

Koppenhaver, who legally changed his name to War Machine during an MMA career in which he went 14-5 while competing for the UFC and Bellator, spoke Monday of his troubled past and sorrowful state of mind. “I should have killed myself by now,” he said (via ESPN). “There’s no reason right now that I shouldn’t be in the dirt right now laying next to Aaron Hernandez.”

“Not a day goes by that I don’t seriously regret all those things that I did. I was a very, very lost, very empty person,” Koppenhaver added in his statement. “And to top it off, something’s not right with my head. Plain and simple. I’ve known that a long time and I’ve hated it. I’ve hated the way that I think. I’ve hated my impulses. Half the time, I don’t know why I do some the things I do. And some of the times I do things and I don’t even feel like I did them until it’s already done.”

Koppenhaver’s defense attorney submitted a motion Monday for a new trial, claiming that he had been unable to prepare a case that his client attacked Mack while in a state of unconsciousness, but Cadish denied it. The judge said that she did not think Koppenhaver was “a monster” and that some of his issues stemmed from a difficult childhood, but she stated that his actions merited a lengthy sentence.

“As an adult, it’s up to you to address the issues that you had, and certainly, as you know, it’s not appropriate to take it out on these other people around you,” Cadish said (via MMA Fighting). “It’s not like this case is the first case. . . . There were many points along the way that should have been red flags that something had to change. I’m just grateful that we don’t have a murder case on our hands.”

At his trial, Koppenhaver was acquitted of two counts of attempted murder, but he was convicted on the other serious charges despite his lawyer’s claims that the ex-fighter had suffered brain injuries and was experiencing “’roid rage.” Mack testified that she frequently saw Koppenhaver use steroids.

Koppenhaver had turned down a pair of plea deals that might have resulted in shorter prison terms, choosing instead to take the case to trial.
