This case is a 44 year old man with no history of psychological problems. His family was aware of his craving to eat metal objects, but claimed it never caused any problems.

One day he began experiencing severe abdominal pain and nausea, so he went to a doctor, who treated his pain and referred him to the hospital for further care. The hospital discharged him after 30 minutes. 3 hours after being discharged, his condition suddenly became much worse, and he could hardly walk, so his sister called 911. He suddenly died on the way to the hospital, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

An autopsy concluded that he died from peritonitis (an inflammation / infection of the abdominal wall) caused by duodenal perforation (a tear in the stomach / intestine). About 64 pieces of metal including coins, bolts, and fittings were removed from the man's digestive tract, weighing in total just over 8 pounds.
