just looks to me like they slammed it in something like a door and the fingernail is falling off. I was bowling once and broke my middle finger on my right hand and the nail turned dark and fell off. just my guess though.

Looks really gross but Beatlemorgan is probably right...just jammed the finger against something and killed the nail...but it looks like he might have a pretty bad infection going on underneath. It could also just be dried blood. My husband did something similar to this by jamming his toe into a stair when he was in a hurry. He came home with blood all over his sock. He ended up having to have the nail cut completely off by the doctor but it did grow back though the doctor wasn't sure it would. I dropped a weight on my toe when I was a teenager and it hurt but at first I didn't think it was that bad, but it caused a very thin crack in the nail and got infected, turned all red and purple and yucky looking and I had to have it removed too and had to put drops of an antibiotic type medicine where the nail used to be until it grew back. What's weird is that when it grew back, it had these ridges going across it kind of like a washboard except they weren't quite that raised, still grows like that to this day and that was 18 years ago.
