We were just talking about that the other day at work. 62 year old Norwegian guy I work with, perfectly entitled to retire at 60. he says he couldn't live at home with his wife full time, or he'd go crazy. He's worked offshore for 35 years. I've done it for 20 now, and probably have another 7-8 to go before I could afford to retire.

The other point is, how 'useless' will you feel when you retire, as I'm sure for some people it means you've stepped over that boundary when you are too old to be of any use, chucked on the scrap heap as such. One step closer to death.

Being forced to retire would be worse than making the decision yourself I think, but unless you have a decent pension scheme the money drops a hell of a lot too.

I have shed loads of hobbies and stuff, building hot rods, bikes, DIY etc, so I'd be busy enough, no mooching round the house with nothing to do. Another problem most people have: no pastimes or hobbies other than work.
