Re: Name That Birth Defect

Isn't there a baby on here similar to that one? I know I saw it somewhere recently, the baby had a little hat on over the brain protrusion in one photo, and there was an ultrasound photo where you could see the defect.

Re: Name That Birth Defect

but Anencephaly is when the baby is missing part or most of the brain/cranium. All the pics I have seen of this condition, the fetuses look more of less the same - bulging eyes and little to no mass behind the eyes & ears. This one is so hard to tell without seeing head-on. Its those horrendous stretched/ripped eye sockets that really give it the WTF!?!? factor....never saw anything quite like that...
That's part of the cleft, "Oblique facial cleft".

Most of the kids that have Encephalocele have a cleft of some type...

Re: Name That Birth Defect

This is actually a very large encephalocele. It can mimic anencephaly, but in this case the brain did develop and herniated through a skull defect. In anencephaly, the brain doesn't develop.

Re: Name That Birth Defect

Anencephaly = no brain develops at all, so the head is really small.

Encephalocele = brain does develop, but kinda squeezes out of an opening in the skull, only surrounded by skin.

Hope this helps!

Re: Name That Birth Defect

Brometheus... To add to above reply, in Encephalocele the head appears like twice as large as normal. Basically the brain grows on the outside of the skull.
