Myiasis in Humans Pictures: Mouth, Scalp, Leg and Penis
Myiasis is an infestation of human tissue by fly larvae, commonly called maggots. Flies can deposit eggs or larvae on wounds, sores, or in the nose or ears. Some species transfer their eggs through biting mosquitoes, other flies or ticks. Myiasis cannot spread from person to person. The condition occurs mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. It is uncommon in the United States, where most diagnoses involve travel to affected areas. Open or untreated wounds increase the risk, and oral myiasis is rare even in developing countries. Some larvae feed on dead tissue, while others feed on living tissue or move deeper into the body, causing severe damage. Treatment involves removing the larvae and cleaning the affected wound; damaged tissue may also require surgical removal. |
