Re: Muda Fakas I Got a New Hip Innit !!
I was lucky with my hemi replacement. I'd been on high doses of prednisone for months, gaining 60+ pounds, but I didn't know it could cause severe osteoporosis. I fell in the shower one day, hitting my left hip on the faucet. Fucker hurt like hell for months. I'd already had osteoarthritis for years in that hip, so my doc just said, well, osteo can cause severe pain. He gave me naproxen. I took so much I ended up with two bleeding ulcers, getting two pints of blood every three to four weeks. X-rays had come back negative, but I could barely walk. I'm a teacher, and went back to work. On my feet most of the day and it was agony. One day, I got up from my desk and went to walk; heard a "pop" or "snap," and found I couldn't walk at all. At all. I couldn't hop on my good leg, either. Long story short - the femoral head had snapped through. Apparently it had been fractured all along, but it was a hairline fracture held in place because it didn't go all the way through. Now it had finally broken off. The fracture happened in May, and the femoral head broke off in November, so I suffered through severe pain and disability for six months. Surgery went well. The osteoarthritis that had been giving me pain for years was cured with the replacement, too. I had a narcotics pump I could use myself to dose for pain, plus additional opiates every three hours as needed, for three days. The next day, they told me they'd be transferring me to some kind of care home where I'd learn to walk again for about three weeks, and said PT would be coming to get me out of bed in a few hours so I could "dangle" that leg. Said I wouldn't be able to put my full weight on it for at least four days. I went ahead and did it that very day; went up and down two flights of stairs the third day, and didn't need any damn care home. Fuck, I'm not 90 years old. Plus they said I'd always have a limp, and within a few weeks had my regular gait back. Like I said, I was lucky, but the chief of orthopaedics did the surgery. My scar is about four inches long, but the replacement below the femoral head itself is only about seven inches or so, not the whole femur. Gotta love titanium. Sorry to go on about it, but just wanted to give those who are facing such a surgery an optimistic story. I have had absolutely no pain at all, even in winter or on rainy days, ever since. |
