MRSA Infection in Right Leg
These photos are of my recent stay in the hospital and recovery at home of a "serious" MRSA Infection that took over my lower right leg. **NOTE** I am NOT a diabetic. I contracted MRSA from a local hospital after a car accident in 2010. It has flared up twice before. This BY FAR was the worse case. We were about 12 hours from making the decision to remove the leg below the knee. The infection would not stop. I had a PICC line installed into my right arm and was given Cubicin (Daptomycin) to fight the infection. Luckily this did the trick. I had to go through 88 doses of Cubicin at the hospital and at home at around $1000 a dose. Thank God for medical insurance! I spent 10 days in the hospital and another month recuperating at home. I'm nearly 2 months now out of the hospital and feeling fine! The leg looks like shit though but hey... I still got it. May 20th - My leg starts to swell after cutting grass and a fever develops. I spiked at 105 in the emergency room. The photos you see are only 2 hours apart. By the 23rd it was really nasty and the pain was horrible! That PICC line went straight to my heart so when they injected me with Fentanyl and Diladuid... I would IMMEDIATELY feel the effect. They would flush the line and add a bit of saline to it but they would inject the syringe directly into my PICC line and not through the UV bag. I quickly learned why people get hooked on IV drugs. The last 3 photos are of me at home getting a dressing change by a nurse. **NOTE** All the white stuff on my leg is Silvidene, a silver based cream that helped with healing. Ask any questions if you wish. |

Re: MRSA Infection in Right Leg
Thanks to all of you for the kind words. Yes it is painful... very painful. Almost as if you are wading in boiling french fry grease. The pain meds were AWESOME! They would only last about 2 hours and then they had to hit me again. I would rather have Kelly stand over me and CONTINUE to crush my nether region with a 25lb sledge hammer than to go through this pain again. Problem I was bitten by a Brown Recluse on that shin about 14 years ago while working for the Fire Department. The leg has always been susceptible to infection. Now I have dropped 200lbs in 16 months and the weight loss has helped tremendously with the healing. |
