Re: The Miracle of Birth......

It's really quite grose, the pain is burning searing for hours & hours, 35hrs for my first. No painkillers in 1977. I would not wish it on my worst enemy & I am glad I didn't have girls & yes I agree that if someone had offered to shoot me I would have said yes, no kidding there's no miricle there, just a hell of a lot of pain & a bundle of screaming, spewing sleep deprivation for the next at least 7 years

That's a shame you weren't prepared properly for natural childbirth and had such a terrible and painful experience that you would have taken a bullet just to end it!! Thank GOD you didn't have any girls to freak out with your horror story. And if you had "7 years of screaming and spewing sleep deprivation" I wonder wtf happened in the parenting department. This kind of negativism toward childbirth and parenting really makes me wonder why people even BOTHER to fancy the idea of raising a family--and what kind of citizens they will eventually put forth into society.

I'm sorry if you feel my coment is harsh judgement, but let's face it; YOU put your commentary up publicly, so you can expect all sorts of reactions to it.

Because I constantly seek truth in everything, I am gonna offer a counter commentary to offset your very negative scare-tactic story with some facts, as well as my personal experience. I hope some people will feel a little better and enlightened.

Childbirth is a painful BUT natural process that can be made A LOT less painful through certain relaxation techniques!

I know this because the last 2 of my 3 kids were homebirths---no drugs, no cutting, no *agony*. I had a midwife and my husband and several friends and assistants present for both homebirths. Yeah, it does hurt, but gallstone/gallbladder attacks hurt far worse IMO!

You say there was no painkiller in 1977 for childbirth?! Yes, they had painkillers---they even used general anesthesia too, starting WAY back in the 1920's.

It is very unfortunate that your experience was so painful--it didn't HAVE to be. The different prepared childbirth classes of today have changed the way labor and delivery is approached. Fear and pain creates more fear and pain in a vicious circle.

Even in 1977, there were prepared childbirth classes available that would have helped reduce your pain and anxiety significantly.

Because general anesthesia (which was very popular in the 1920's and later) was found to be unsafe, different methods of natural pain reduction were introduced, starting with the Lamaze Method in the 1940's. There are many other methods of natural childbirth, but they all basically use the same relaxation techniques and mental imagery to help a woman though even an ardurous labor without drugging herself and her baby. Educating a woman about what will happen during each stage of labor is key in pain control during labor, well all know if we know what to expect, anxiety is reduced. Anxiety during childbirth increases pain exponetially!

Please don't scare all the young ladies out there with tales of childbirth horror!!

Women, arm yourselves with facts about pregnancy and childbirth from educational books and other sources. Don't worry, it's not THAT bad!!

PS. Hormonal changes in the days before labor commences makes the entire vaginal/perineal area super soft and stretchy. That is how such an impossibly big thing is able to be passed out such a "tiny" opening. Once birth is over, hormonal shifts happen again, and all the organs involved in the birth process involute (return to normal size) over time.

PPS. C-sections to "spare" the pussy are not done, lol
