Mashed Finger
Not mine but happened today. Mashed in a 24 max diameter lathe chuck that was spinning down. Extending and flexing tendons cut coming off at first knuckle.

He is very fortunate. What usually happens with gear-driven metal lathes, is that the victim is drawn in and wrapped around the chuck, killing them in the process. With woodworking tools, you lose a finger. With a metal lathe, you lose your life.  |

I've seen it done where I work, they hit the stop button but don't have the patience to wait for the chuck to spin down by itself so they stop I with their hand

This is what happened. Spinning down to get ready to install bar to tighten down flange for pipe. It has happened about 4 times in the last 2 years here. He is lucky and lucky it was a smaller lathe. We have some that can handle 64 or greater pipe.

Maybe you can collect some of the lathe death videos from here, and have a safety training class. 4 events in 2 years shows that they are acting VERY stupidly around this dangerous equipment! If there is no change in conduct, I guarantee you will have a fatality soon! |
