His infection is a consequence of poor glycemic control. This fungus (aka mucor) is great at feeding on ketones. He is very lucky as this infection is mostly fatal.

As an educational note to anyone with diabetes (type 1 or 2): Mucormycosis is a serious consequence of poor glycemic control. This is highly fatal and the treatment (Amphotericin) is no bueno either.
