The way I understand it: a person's sex are the biological characteristics which distinguish males from females; in this case intersex - both male and female organs, i.e. hermaphroditism. Gender is what sex a person associates with, in this case a female/a 'she'. Can be other things, e.g. transgender, pangender etc...
