Re: Man Dies of Rabbies
They do, but you have to get it BEFORE any symptoms start. We have a preventative rabies vaccine that is given before contact. Wildlife rehabbers and the like, are required to have this. We also have the vaccine that's given after contact. I'm not sure if these two vaccines are the same thing, or not. Once the symptoms start, there's nothing that can be done. That's why, if you get bitten by any mammal that has no rabies vaccination on record, it's important to get to the hospital. Feeling fine means nothing when it comes to rabies. |

Re: Man Dies of Rabbies
We had a cat growing up that died of rabies. It was devastating to see him like that, foaming at the mouth, and he could barely walk straight. He only came back for a few minutes then he staggered off to die alone. I had nightmares for weeks because we had just seen the movie 'Rabies' a couple of days before. The absolute worst part of that disease is not being able to swallow - the thought strikes pure fear in me.

Re: Man Dies of Rabbies
With the post-encounter rabies shots, there is a window of time within which they are effective, after that you're S.O.L. Fun fact: Opossum body temperatures run too high for the rabies virus to take hold. That poor man. :/ |

Re: Man Dies of Rabbies
It's that their body temperature is too LOW for the rabies virus to thrive. That means that they get it less than other mammals, but it does not mean that they are immune to it. |
