Story:

A fisherman, Braxton Rocha, was bitten on his left leg by a 13-foot-long tiger shark on Sunday afternoon before swimming back to shore off the northern tip of the Big Island and calling for help.

The 27-year-old was taken by ambulance to Kamehameha Park before being flown by helicopter to North Hawaii Hospital for surgery, where he documented his journey as he was being loaded onto a stretcher into the ambulance.

“WOO, I just got attacked by a tiger shark!” Rocha says in a short vine posted to Instagram, where he pans down to his left leg, revealing a large chunk of his flesh missing from his left thigh.

The local Kapaau man had been swimming in the ocean during brown water conditions. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says Rocha’s shark attack is an incident that occurred in an isolated and remote area.

However, they remind people to avoid entering the murky water during these conditions.

The likelihood of being killed by a shark in your lifetime is one in 3,700,000 compared to the one in 63 chance of dying from the flu. Most of these shark attacks happen to males, like Rocha, who was able to successfully escape.

Rocha’s mom, Laurie Rocha, has taken to Facebook to say her son is OK. “To all my FB 'ohana and friends, I just want to send out a huge MAHALO for all your prayers as Braxton goes through surgery and many days of recovery,” she wrote.

"Doctor just came in, all is well. Good prognosis, just need to watch for infection. Love to all of you from Willy, myself, and our family.”

Now I'm intrigued by the thought of ALL of the miserable times I've had the flu and had a 1 in 64 chance of dying from it..
