Li Guoxing: Face Transplant After Bear Attack, Xi'an, China, April 14, 2006
Li Guoxing underwent China's first partial face transplant at Xijing Hospital in Xi'an on April 14, 2006, after a black bear attack destroyed much of the right side of his face and his nose. Li, a 30-year-old farmer, had been looking for a lost sheep near his village when he encountered the bear and tried to drive it away with a stick. A surgical team led by Guo Shuzhong transplanted a right cheek, upper lip, nose and eyebrow from a brain-dead male donor. It was the world's second face transplant, following Isabelle Dinoire's surgery in France in 2005. Li died at his rural home in July 2008, aged 32. Guo said Li had stopped taking anti-rejection drugs and turned to herbal medicine after returning home against medical advice in late 2007. The exact cause of death was not established. Relatives declined an autopsy after his burial. |

Re: Li Guoxing: Face Transplant After Bear Attack, Xi'an, China, April 14, 2006
I saw a special on these on TLC, Discovery, etc. (one of those channels). SO the doc does this operation and sends him home with drugs to fight his body rejecting it, and he ends up stopping the drug use. Don't know what happened in the end but he lives in a very remote part of the Country with no docs around, and his body was starting to reject the transplant.
