I don't post much but most of the threads I find fascinating are yours.Get well soon my friend. You are the reason many are so willing to donate organs, give blood and bone marrow and consider more "taboo" tissue donation procprocedures. *kisses*

Re: Kidneys And Krap

Those symptoms sounded like you were in shock. Yuck.

Oh dear goodness your abdomen. That must be horrid!

Can't they just remove both and put you on home PD?!? My aunt was on peritoneal dialysis for many years and did well.

Well, kidney failure comes in one of two ways-your kidneys continue to work (allowing you to urinate), but no longer filter out the toxins, or they fail completely, and you can no longer urinate. My eldest brother went into stage 2 failure, and had both kidneys removed. His liquid restrictions were unbelievable!
They won't remove an organ that still has some function to it (unless you're talking cancer or something), as this falls under malpractice.

Re: Kidneys And Krap

Very sorry to hear that. If I were a little smarter and a lot more applied I'd be a nephrologist. Astonishing organs. When learning about them in my non-nephrologist course, I was most amazed by the fact the nephron (smallest functional unit of the kidney) filters *all* the liquid part of blood out leaving only protein to return to circulation, and then reclaims 99 per cent of it. It's easy to think they simply draw the nasties out of whole blood but they go in hard, suck out the lot, and pick what to reject. Specialised cells called podocytes have feet which wrap around the knot of capillaries which feed the nephron, featuring slits which can be widened or narrowed to change the filtration ratio. I could go on.

Apparently 3D printing is delivering new dialysis filters which can be re-used. I assume you're on dialysis now - it's amazing dialysis exists, but I hope you find a transplant.
"A little smarter"?!?
My friend, if you were any smarter your brain would blow a flat and run out your nose...

Re: Kidneys And Krap

My father died from PKD, and many members of my family have eithet passed away or are still fighting it. Are you on the list for a donor kidney, or are you on dialysis yet, DaFuq?
I'm sorry about you losing your dad, LGH! I lost my mom in '94 after she'd had both liver and kidney transplants done.
No, I'm not on any donor lists yet, and I still have awhile to go before dialysis, thankfully.
I might get to go in and get a bunch of cysts drained to give me some more room, though, so I'm pretty excited about that!
Usually they put you to sleep for that, but the past few times I've had it done they've let me stay awake because I like to watch.
They have an 8 inch needle attached to a hose and a vacuum jar. They go in through your back and when they hit a cyst it sucks it dry in just a few seconds.
I kid you not, the cyst fluid looks just like beer with a serious head on it! What's really cool is when they hit a cyst you've bled into, then the fluid is cammo green.
I can't wait to post that on here!

DaFuq- I sure hope whatever you have done works for you, and painlessly at that!
Those first pics made me want to pop the cysts like bubble wrap!
Oh Lord! Bubble wrap! I so owe you for that one! It made me laugh so hard!

Wow! Thank you for the compliment! I'm glad you like my threads.
Organ donation is so important!
I know that a lot of people are afraid of it, but they shouldn't be.
My son and I have already expressed to each other that should something happen to either of us, we both want full body donation.
That's probably what my next thread is going to be about.
Hugs and kisses to you, too, sweetie!

I had a kidney workup done for my aunt when I was 24. We were a match () and I have the one transplantable kidney but was a little too heavy and too young to be considered a prime candidate.

Transplant teams prefer older living donors (40+) mainly as they have a longer track record of healthy organs.

I'm on the provincial transplant list if I should die (I'm donating everything but my very curved corneas) and I've also joined that worldwide unrelated bone marrow list.

Re: Kidneys And Krap

LHG, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought your father died of cancer as well.
No, Anom Alley, my dad did not die from cancer. He did have skin cancers, nothing that would have killed him. He died as a result of choosing to cease his hemodialysis. He'd been on dialysis for 15 years. He had PKD his entire life.

Where'd you hear he died of cancer? I think maybe you're thinking of someone else

Ewwww nasty! Damn. Dad never had that done. His kidneys were massive too. People used to think he had a beer belly, they didn't understand it was all kidneys.

Thank you for your condolences, it was only 18 months ago, so it still doesn't really feel real
