Kidneys And Krap
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within your kidneys. Cysts are noncancerous round sacs containing water-like fluid. The cysts vary in size and, as they accumulate more fluid, they can grow very large. Although kidneys usually are the most severely affected organs, polycystic kidney disease can cause cysts to develop in your liver and elsewhere in your body. The disease causes a variety of serious complications. |

Re: Kidneys And Krap
I was diagnosed with PKD when I was 13, and had a grand total of 3 tiny cysts. Fast-forward to now, at 48 years old, and the disease has completely overwhelmed both of my kidneys and my liver. Your average kidney is about the size of your fist-mine are a little bigger than a football. As you can see from the x-ray, they do a pretty good job of compressing your internal organs. It takes very little food to fill me. An average meal for me consists of a banana, 1/2 a piece of toast and a yogurt. That keeps me full for most of the day. I started this thread because a few people were interested in the things that will be happening next. I've been in kidney failure for awhile now. I'm currently running at about 50%. But this weekend a lot of things changed very rapidly for me. |

Re: Kidneys And Krap
I felt very tired most of this weekend, but Sunday afternoon I got slammed bad-Dizziness, weakness, the dry heaves (because of the stomach compression I can't vomit), sweats, chills, tremors, and enough kidney pain that both my eyes damn near went in the same socket. Needless to say I ended up going to the e.r. via ambulance. What I found out has me both a little frightened and a little hopeful. My kidneys are not doing very well. Lab work has shown that my kidneys "filters" are now damaged and I might have a complication called "Acute tubular necrosis" and "Nephritis". The good thing about that is that it means I might finally get my left kidney removed. (The left one is the most painful and debilitating as it's so big I can't lean to my left, tie my left shoe, etc). In the next few coming weeks I'm going to get the chance to record them doing an aspiration (that involves sticking an 8 inch needle through my back to drain large cysts-I've had this done twice so far), biopsies, a retro-cysto urethralgram, and all kinda neat, gory little tests hopefully leading up to them either removing my left kidney completely, or at least a large chunk of it. But right now I'm very sick and tire out easily. I'll try to keep up on my other threads as I love grossing you all out, but it may take me longer. Just try to be a little patient with me. *Hugs* \^^/ (Polycystic kidney disease is one of the most common life-threatening genetic diseases, affecting an estimated 12.5 million people worldwide.) |

Re: Kidneys And Krap
Thanks, guys. I have an appointment tomorrow with the doc to discuss the first things that we should do. He already knows that I want any invasive procedures recorded for D.R. and has agreed to it. So, hopefully within the next week, I'll have something neat to post. |
