Exactly.

I also wonder why they just drained the abscess and not opened it up and cleaned it out.

Is that not something that is done with abscesses, or does it depend on the case?

Not the very worst one I've seen, but a bad one nonetheless, especially when the docs are talking about showers and "getting it on you".
