I’m not a doctor, but my guess is they’re keeping it open to assure the internal wounds left from the lung removal are fully healed before they close that access port. Not to mention if there was some complication. And who knows what his future reconstructive plan is, whether he’ll have surgery, how many surgeries, and what kind of surgery he’d be having. So they figure why reconstruct everything if they will just have to undo it? |

He's had ribs removed. I think he'll need artificial replacement ribs and a muscle graft, then a skin graft. Trying to stretch a skin graft over the hole wouldn't work, it needs a blood supply and a supporting structure or it dies.
