One of he most common method HIV transmission in the developed world is through the sharing of IV needles by drug addicts. There are also cases of tainted blood being used during emergency procedures. I cared for a man who had that misfortune. He went in for emergency surgery clean as a whistle and came out HIV+. That was in '92. Amazingly, he's not all that angry about it. Probably because he alternative option was certain death; half his face and skull had been completely crushed when he got stomped on by a bull at his family ranch.
