Hiker Walked 10 Miles Down Granite Peak with Trekking Pole Impaling His Torso

David, a healthcare professional, was hiking with friends on Granite Peak, the highest and most treacherous summit in Montana. During the technical ascent, he lost his footing and fell directly onto his equipment. One of his trekking poles pierced entirely through his torso.

As a hospital worker, David immediately recognized his options. He knew that calling a helicopter or mountain rescue team for an emergency evacuation would cost tens of thousands of dollars out-of-pocket, potentially bankrupting him.

He chose not to remove the pole, as it was likely stopping him from bleeding to death. Supported by his horrified but supportive friends, he walked 10 miles down rugged, steep mountain terrain.

The descent took over 6 grueling hours of continuous walking under intense pain.

David eventually reached a local emergency room under his own power. Surgeons successfully extracted the trekking pole and repaired his internal injuries. He survived the ordeal with no permanent damage, thanks in large part to his decision to leave the pole in place during the walk.

Did he scream “fore” before or after his pole-in-one?
