Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus is also called Shingles. It is a painful, blistering red skin rash due to the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles may develop in any age group, but you are more likely to develop the condition if:
  • You are older than 60
  • You had chickenpox before age 1
  • Your immune system is weakened by medications or disease

Re: Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

I did not know about the chicken pox prior to age one. I thought it was just chicken pox as a child. My father-in-law had this internally in his abdomen...very very painful and really odd too.

That's what I thought too. Hopefully we are wrong! I didn't get chicken pox until I was in 9th grade

Re: Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

These cases seem extreme. I hope these are not the "norm"

Re: Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

We had guys at work that had it, but not like those photos. It was usually in the abdominal trunk area and it looked like a mild burn or hives...no scabbing or pussing. It thought it was also caused by stress as well.

Re: Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

My BIL got this in the eye when his daughter got chx pox. My sis had never had it as a child, so she got the pox as well, right as she was recovering from gallbladder surgery. BIL's eye looked like the 5th picture. It was horrendous- he even had a seizure at the eye doctor's- probably from lack of food, water as he hadn't eaten for days as it affected his jaw as well. He and my sis were in their mid forties. He still has flare ups of this shit, after five years. What a happy family that was, at the time! I had chx pox twice as a kid- at five and seven.

Re: Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

Bloody hell I had chicken pox when I was five, and it was an exceptionally nasty case from what I can recall and based on what my parents told me. These ones look even more shitty to suffer from. Eeewww!

Re: Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

My mom had shingles as recently as a month ago. It wasn't visible on her, but she did say it itched a lot. She's much better now, after taking prescribed medicine to treat it.
