I had a ventral hernia which is just above the belly button. I had it for years, I could tuck it in when I had to do some lifting or lean against something. It was about the size of a ping pong ball. It wasn't painful at all.
I eventually had it fixed. When the anesthesia wore off it was the most painful thing imaginable.
Same here, and I agree on the pain. The surgeon warned me in advance that it's the most painful surgery they do.
