I think it's just the impulse to feel in control of complicated things with simple means ... and a lack of understanding of medical science. Doctors aren't always particularly good at explaining things, and some don't even try. I've met more than a reasonable number of scientists who seem to intentionally communicate far above the level of the layperson ... as if they enjoy baffling people not in their field of study. It doesn't really serve anyone, because then people without the medical/scientific training are left trying to explain things to each other.
