Re: Healthy Human Brain Compared with 90 Year Old Brain

Watching that video is so unreal. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that at one point, that brain that they're cutting into was inside another living person's body, containing their hopes and dreams, and controlling their every action. It's absolutely mind-boggling to think that every emotion or thought that they ever had, was nothing more than an electrical impulse.

It makes me wonder; When we die, what happens to our thoughts, memories, and all the things that make us unique? Do they simply cease to be?
Electricity is pure energy, and cannot be created or destroyed, just changed from one form to another.

So no, we do not simply cease to exist, we simply change form.

What entails that form is subject to much debate.

We all end up on the slab mate
Well I don't think I could have put it any more elegantly

Perhaps that's where souls come into play

Re: Healthy Human Brain Compared with 90 Year Old Brain

Fascinating thread!
I have done a fair bit of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology as well as neuropathology and I can tell you that that brain looks HIGHLY unusual. The big holes on either side are normal, they are ventricles, but the other areas that look like they have eroded are in the temporal lobes which are responsible for language and a host of other functions.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy results from
getting your bell rung repeatedly over the course of years in sports. The resultant plaques of dislodged proteins destroy healthy tissue and gradually rob the person of himself. Terrifying. You are your brain.

90 years is a long time to be enclosed in a warm tight space..

It totally makes sense to me. Everyone knows that when you get old you shrink everywhere, except for one place for each sex.

Re: Healthy Human Brain Compared with 90 Year Old Brain

I saw that first hand. The difference in the brain from baby to elderly adult is very obvious and it did mesmerize me as I held it thinking "My God, all this persons memories are in here, WHAT are they made of???"

Great thread

Re: Healthy Human Brain Compared with 90 Year Old Brain

I know a lady that's cool as hell, 104 years old. Still volunteers at the local hospital. Not for me, though. I wonder what it's like to wake up in the morning to realize that you are 104 years old.

Re: Healthy Human Brain Compared with 90 Year Old Brain

Stop the presses, Marie is actually 105. Thought so.

Callicoon Woman Turns 105

105-year-old--Marie Zalesky, left, eats her birthday cake during a party at Grover Hermann Hospital in Callicoon on Friday afternoon. Marie was born in Callicoon and lived her life in the area, still volunteers at the hospital once a week. She started working there in 1971. When asked what keeps her going, Zalesky said, "a lot of hard work."

(For some reason, I couldn't post the photo.)
