Healthy Human Brain Compared with 90 Year Old Brain

A healthy human brain (left) compared to the brain of a 90 year old (right) which is only two thirds the size of the young brain. Over time, white matter decreases and the brain shrinks. This gradual shrinkage is most extreme between age 70 and 80.

I thought so too, amazing to see the difference.
I never thought that the diminished mental capacity in the elderly actually had to do with a physical reduction of brain matter

I wish I could compare a retired NFL players brain.
You can, this was my first result using Google so I'm certain there are many more if you take a look.
Here is the story:

The NFL star and the brain injuries that destroyed him
Before the former American football player Dave Duerson killed himself, he asked that his brain be left to researchers studying head injuries among athletes. What it revealed shocked the scientists.
and the link to the story http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/20...ries-destroyed
Photo and a video of the Neuropathologist examining Dave Duerson's brain:

Re: Healthy Human Brain Compared with 90 Year Old Brain

Watching that video is so unreal. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that at one point, that brain that they're cutting into was inside another living person's body, containing their hopes and dreams, and controlling their every action. It's absolutely mind-boggling to think that every emotion or thought that they ever had, was nothing more than an electrical impulse.

It makes me wonder; When we die, what happens to our thoughts, memories, and all the things that make us unique? Do they simply cease to be?
