A teenage construction worker from the US state of Montana has been left almost entirely limbless after a freak forklift accident.

Loren Schauers, 18, was working at a site about two and a half hours from his home in late October when the accident happened.

He was operating a forklift, which he says he was not certified to do, through the site when he saw a car barreling towards him.

Thinking it would come to a stop before any collision, he continued.

The car, however, did not stop and ploughed into him, sending him and the forklift sprawling down a gravel mound.

The authors added to their review nine UT Southwestern patients who had received the procedure as a result of terminal pelvic osteomyelitis, a type of bone infection.

About a third of the 66 patients survived at least nine years after having a hemicorporectomy. Of those who had the procedure for the bone infection, more than half survived at least nine years. Of the nine terminal pelvic osteomyelitis-driven patients treated at UT Southwestern, four remained alive after 25 years and the average survival was 11 years.
