Fear and ignorance, I suspect. Having never seen anyone bleed like that before, they might have been shocked into staring at that sight. And, if they didn't know how to deliver basic first aid, they might likely be afraid to try to help. As for me and my brothers (and my kids), we were taught basic first-aid via the Boy Scouts of America. My brother and I actually went through the scouts program; my kids were taught by me using current BSoA first-aid educational materials. |

I doubt it, without stemming the arterial flow with a clamp or otherwise I think he would have continued to bleed out.
