When I first heard about the possibility of whole face transplants I thought it was freaky. I imagined you would literally be walking around with the donors face (ie, looking just like them) and I didn't like that idea much. Both for the recipient and the donors family. But duh, I wasn't using the old brain cells, because later I watched a documentary which pointed out the obvious, a face only looks the way it does because of the bone structure etc underneath. Once that skin is attached to different bone structure it will look different. That's when I realised it is a brilliant idea and opens up a whole new lease on life for those that are badly disfigured. I am going to donate my face. If anyone wants to walk around looking like a slapped arse they are welcome to it. |
