Finlay Games and Drew Bushnell, previously known as Abbie and Kate, plan to have a spiritual wedding in Glasgow in two years time after Finlay's last gender reassignment operation.

A couple who started going out together as women are now set to marry as men – with both preparing to undergo sex change surgery.

Finlay Games and Drew Bushnell began their relationship almost five years ago when they were living as women. But both of them knew they had been born the wrong gender.

The couple, previously known as Abbie and Kate, became engaged last year, reports the Daily Record. They plan to have a spiritual wedding in Glasgow in two years time, when Finlay’s last gender reassignment operation will be complete.

Drew, who grew up in Irvine, Ayrshire, hopes he will also have started hormone treatment and have his breasts removed by then. Psychology student Finlay, 41, said, “I proposed to Drew at Kelvingrove Park. I had this idea of using love locks, which are engraved padlocks, as an engagement idea. We both love the outdoors so it was perfect."

“We can’t wait to get married but won’t have our wedding until 2017 because that’s when I’ll have graduated and we’ll both be our true selves by then.” Finlay, who also works as a volunteer for the Topas lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group, was the first to admit wanting to become a man It was an admission he was terrified could change his relationship with girlfriend Kate forever. But, she took it in her stride and vowed to support him all the way.

However, in a strange twist of fate, as Finlay began to sprout facial hair and prepare to have his breasts removed, Kate realised she, too, was a man trapped inside a woman’s body.

Days before Finlay’s breast operation, she told him she wanted to go through gender reassignment as well. Drew, 32, said, “When Finlay started to become a man something clicked inside of me and I realised why I’d never felt right in my body.

“It was difficult and I could tell he was shocked but he understood how I was feeling. “I didn’t want to overshadow his decision and was happy for him, but, it was difficult for me as I felt the same way.

“With his support, I changed my name to Drew and started my own journey.” The one time lesbian couple, who live in Oxford, will wed as gay men. �

Finlay said, “We decided to get married in Glasgow as we both have connections there and love Scotland.” The couple’s remarkable story began in 2006. They became friends after meeting in a gay bar in Oxford and bonded over their obsession with clubbing and real ale. Love blossomed and the pair moved in together in 2010. But, Finlay was in turmoil and developed a hatred for his body.

He said, “Since the age of 10, I always knew I was different. I knew I was gay when I was 14. “I never felt comfortable in my own skin. I hated pink, Barbie dolls and I point blank refused to wear dresses. “My mum knew something was wrong. She even took me to a doctor when I was a teenager, but, she was told it was just a phase.

“To try to cope with my feelings, I drank a lot through my teens and early 20s. I hoped alcohol would make me feel better about myself but it didn’t. “I conquered my addiction and when I became sober, that’s when I knew.”

As Abbie, Finlay was happy with Kate, but, began to realise only gender reassignment surgery would make him truly content. Finlay said, “Telling her was always going to be the hardest part of my transition. I was so nervous, bu,t she was incredibly supportive."

"Then, when Kate told me she also wanted to be a man, I was slightly in shock. But, I knew exactly what it felt like and it only made us stronger.” As Finlay began taking hormone replacement drugs to become more masculine, Drew decided it was time for the change.

He began attending a gender identity clinic after a year of adjusting to life as a man at home. In January, he started to live as a man and the pair became a gay couple. Drew said, “It was difficult as I thought a lot of people would assume I was just copying Finlay but I couldn’t continue life as a woman.”

“I’m excited for the next stages of my life. I want to finally feel comfortable with my body and be truly happy.” Finlay added, “Looking back, I think this is why we clicked from the start. Without knowing it, we recognised we were both men in the wrong bodies.We don’t care what people say. Our story can blow your mind, but, we love each other, no matter what the gender.”
