Can anyone explain what the "tubes" of flesh are on these men's faces? In one pic, it looks like a man had his penis grafted onto his arm for safekeeping while he heals, but I don't understand the other "tubes."

They didn't have the surgical technology to reattach tiny blood vessels and nerves. So if they removed skin from some other part of the body and tried to transplant it to the face, it would die. They had to leave the skin attached to its original place until it grew a blood supply on the face.

And btw, thanatos.net is a really neat website. You do have to pay a subscription to see a lot of it. The guy who runs it has a ridiculously huge collection and is a pretty cool guy.
