You're not far wrong. There's a disease caused by spores that can cause disability as bad as this. It was a famous case, so I'm sure it's been posted.Here's a couple of pics anyway.

Yep, osteosarcoma or any number of rare aggressive sarcomas. They invade the soft tissue from the bone, so the eye had to go.

That is a mental operation. I have seen a similar pic and video of a guy who had a similar sort of thing done and his whole eye socket was clean and empty. He was shining a touch in his mouth and lighting up his eye socket. It looked awesome - it's a shame I can't find it.
