Untreated, the prognosis for Anorexia Nervosa is one of Mortality! Ninety percent of untreated sufferers ultimately die. The ones you see here, may in fact be moribund, with irreversible internal organ damage, that would not be medically correctible even if they were forcibly tube fed. Many people don't realize psychological conditions can, in fact, be fatal. It is not a silly "game" being played by vain adolescent women to get attention, its a life ending condition. This is one Psychological condition that has a lower chance for survival than a diagnosis of cancer.

Agreed, I'm 5'7'' and I weigh around 160 lbs and I used to be 125 back when I was a Freshmen,m but at this point, I would also be plenty happy being at 140, but in the end I have to tell myself its not about the weight, but about one's overall health. Worry about being generally healthy first, eating right, exercising moderately everyday, doesn't have to be a big workout. Little bit of exercise a day goes a long way and if you end up losing weight and toning down the fatty areas as a result of being generally healthier than that's awesome, but don't focus on how you look so much. I know easier said than done.

As the stepfather of a 18 year old daughter suffering from Anorexia, I can tell you that the whole family suffers from this wretched disease. We've shelled out over $60,000 for two inpatient rounds of treatment, the myriad of doctor, psychologist, and dietitian bills, the cost for special food, etc. This has been a battle she's fought since she was ten years old and guess what? Heading to California in June for more inpatient treatment. Please, don't look at these young women and men with disdain. This disease has little to do with body image as much as it does about confidence and a feeling of having no control over their lives. Through restricting their food intake, many anorexics can demonstrate to others that they are at least in control of something. I don't know what the root causes are as my step-daughter was raised in a very loving environment outside her mom and dad's divorce. I don't know - her dad is something of a douche but he always seemed to be concerned with her welfare. |

I understand that Anorexia is a disease of the mind, but how in the hell can these people think skin stretched over thier bones is attractive!

Sadly, they can't see themselves the way we see them. They see themselves as fat and fear eating anything because they are afraid to get fatter. Once they have lost enough weight, they have complete organ failure and die. Most will tell you that would be better than getting fat.
