Re: External Fixation During and After Pictures

I was going around a corner doing 65MPH and I hit gravel mid-turn. I slid into a street sign that separated me from my bike and then my body slid 12ft into a concrete barricade. I want to ride again but I have two rods in my back and it is uncomfortable to lean forward.
How long ago was this? And how long has your healing process been?

Okay. Right-hand turn? I know it sounds like a stupid question since your injuries are all on the left-hand side, but there is a method to my madness.

Also - type of bike, time of day, and shape of the turn (kink, ninety degree, hairpin)? Seriously, I am not trying to judge, I understand if you're not cool divulging the parameters publicly. Gathering information on mishaps widens my knowledge base.

Re: External Fixation During and After Pictures

Why do they do that externally?
I broke my tibia and fibula and was offered the choice of an internal "pin" (an intramedullary nail) or an external "cage" (an Ilizarov apparatus)

It was about 16 years ago and I was full of morphine but they summarised the various pros and cons of the nail as being less awkward in recovery, lower chance of infection but the surgery was more invasive and it gave a high chance of problems with the knee, in particular arthritis and the chance to require either osteochondral autograft or knee replacement in the future, because they cut through the patellar tendon and drill into the top of the tibia.

The cage was a simpler surgery, somewhat quicker recovery and didn't carry the risks of damaging the joint cartilage or tendons but infection of the pins were a common complication, it was more awkward to live with. I think external fixation tends to be used more than internal for open fractures and complex fractures that have bone "fragments".

I myself went for the "pin" as they called it, because the cage sounded horrific, but if I got the choice again, I'd go with the external fixation

Re: External Fixation During and After Pictures

Please don’t ride again. I know motorcycles are exciting but… so dangerous. You’re just not well protected, especially against cars.

Re: External Fixation During and After Pictures

I imagine the wreck was your own fault, because I've never met a motorcycle rider that wasn't a fucking idiot. Hope you learn from this and become an adult
