Worldwide, over 90% cases of goitre are caused by iodine deficiency.

typically goiters from iodine deficiency are not painful. it simply gets bigger in an effort to compensate for a decrease in function from lack of iodine. now De Quervain thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid usually following a viral illness) can be very painful
