Effects of a Small Anti Personnel Landmine
A series of old photos showing the effects of small anti personnel landmine. (sorry for the low res). I have added some comments for context. 1.) Photo of the blast site showing the crater and the remains of a victims shoe. A partially exposed mine is also circled in red. 2.) Close photo up of the blast site. 3.) Photo of items recovered from blast site after demining. 4 intact PMA-3 landmines, remains of the 5th exploded one and the remains of the victims shoe. 4.) Diagram of a Yugoslavian PMA-3 landmine showings its internal components. Note how the explosive charge (coloured in yellow) is concentrated in the center upper portion of the device. The weight of the explosive charge is 35 grams. This slightly more than the US M14 APERS "toe popper" mine. 5.) Photo of a sneaker similar to the one found at the blast site. 6.) Comparison of the sneaker remains suggests that the foreword middle section was directly over the PMA3 mine's explosive charge when triggered. Note how the victim's shoe has been split in half. The heel and toe sections are still intact. Only the forefoot portion was destroyed. 7.) A diagram depicting the types of injuries cause by landmines based on field hospital observations. 8.) Type I injury: The outcome if the victim stepped on the small landmine with the extreme tip of the foot. Only the toes would be traumatically amputated. 9.) Type II injury: The most likely outcome to the victim who stepped on the PMA-3 landmine. The realtively small explosive content of the mine is only sufficient to injury a portion directly above it. In this case, forward section of the foot is blown off by blast of the landmine. 10.) Another photo of a Type II injury. 11.) Type III injury: The likely injury had the victim stepped on a small land mine with the rear / heel portion of the foot. 12.) Type IV injury: The likely injury had the victim stepped on a medium to large size landmine with between 75-200 grams of explosive content. The foot is completely destroyed. |

These lower power mines did exactly what they were designed to do.... not kill, but tie up personnel in treating the victim.

While landmines are indiscriminate. They are no less cowardly than lobbing smart bombs from 20,000ft onto target from in front of a video screen.

Even for blast type anti personnel mines. The term mess is all relative. Many mines encountered in the world today have significantly more explosive content than the PMA-3 mine encountered above. While the immediate effect is still the same. The immediate incapacitation of the victim. The consequences and outcome are even more serious than just having the foot mangled.
