Only get the "funk" (Gross stench) if it is a stretched piercing , and most usually if it is with a closed flesh tunnel. (Traps bacteria, sweat, dead skin, etc...)

Standard 14Ga. jewelry usually doesn't cause this.
Daily cleaning prevents stuff like this from occurring. in ANY piercing.
Oral piercings, while new/fresh, rinsing with some Listerine 2-3X's daily. cleaning the piercing externally with some dial soap/antibacterial soap (lip/cheek piercings). can use dead sea salt and water if you have that available externally/swoosh it through piercing, as well as a regular salt water rinse orally.

That's until it's healed. then it's Listerine daily (more the merrier, but good practice would be at least once daily). Little bit of soap and water. (preferably dial or another antibacterial soap)
And since this is healed directions, can take it out, clean the jewelry with Isopropyl alcohol (prefer 91% or greater), rinse the piercing itself, salt water or listerine, clean the outside with Dial etc. Once it is healed and your body didn't reject the jewelry, it's all downhill from there, sounds like a lot to do, but once it is in order, not so bad.

It's an oral piercing, lot can happen in that area. keep it clean and it'll heal and the maintenance becomes barely anything outside of normal daily hygiene.

Now if you go crazy and try to stretch any piercing from 4-6 gauge+ difference in a one jump (jamming an 8 gauge ring through a 14Gauge hole)? or do not maintain it/clean it regularly? stuff like the original post happens.

metal and plastic tunnels/plugs stink to high heaven, but wood and bone don't. apparently it's something to do with them being porous. The crud I used to pull off my wooden tunnels... ick! but they didn't smell.

by the way, the top pic, the scaffolding... that's been bashed, it's not infected. yet.

That's what happens when you try and pierce your ear with a chainsaw
It is likely that the piercing in question was a dermal anchor. They have a high rejection rate and tend to end up scarred and nasty, too!

Huh, I guess I quoted the wrong post. The middle photo of the one-hole piercing is the one I meant!
