Re: Dustin Lafortune - Tortured for Months
I remember this case. I sure as hell hope the police charged him with attempted murder and not aggravated assault. The kid easily could've died. I applaud his courage as he testified against someone affiliated with Hells Angels. I still think that this will come down to some sort of retaliation. |

Re: Dustin Lafortune - Tortured for Months
Im from winnipeg and this was all over the news, apparently the roommate started with small things, threats, a push, a shove, a kick, ect. and then it just got worse over the months. This is also not the first victim! CALGARY -- Four people have been identified as possible victims of a man accused of mutilating, beating and starving his former roommate, then leaving him at a Regina hospital. Dustin Paxton, 30, is already accused of the aggravated assault and forcible confinement of Dustin LaFortune, who police say was tortured over a period of months before being dumped April 16. Paxton is also charged with forcible confinement and aggravated assault involving a girl under 18. Crown attorney Joe Mercier confirmed Thursday that Paxton is also facing charges of assault with a weapon against another man and charges involving a fourth victim are pending. "We anticipate a fourth victim," Mercier told reporters outside the court. "It involves a male. (The charges) will be similar in nature to the others." Paxton's lawyer Jim Lutz said he can't reveal much about the pending charges involving the fourth complainant. "I know about it but I can't say anything yet," Lutz said. "By the preliminary inquiry date (the new charges) will be up and running and they will be at the preliminary inquiry." A one-week preliminary inquiry is scheduled for Jan. 25. All of the outstanding charges will be included in the hearing, which will determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial. Separate trials would be held for each case if allowed to proceed. Lutz said he doesn't expect any other complainants in the case. "Peeling the skin off an onion, I suppose, would be the best analogy," Lutz said. "Anything's possible but I don't think so. Talking to the Crown today they said they believe this is the conclusion of the charges." The Crown intends to call 21 witnesses at the preliminary hearing. Paxton remains in custody. LaFortune, 26, weighed 87 pounds, down from 245, when he was dropped off in Regina. His family has said that in addition to extensive physical injuries, he suffered brain trauma and amnesia. He was reported missed in Calgary on April 12. He had moved to the city from Winnipeg two years ago to work for a moving company owned by Paxton. LaFortune lived and worked with Paxton in both Calgary and Regina. A 60-day psychiatric examination found Paxton fit to stand trial. Lutz has selected trial by judge and jury. |
