Heartbreaking video shows woman giving birth on San Francisco sidewalk

April 10, 2023- The San Francisco Fire Department said a child was born in public view Thursday, and video posted to social media appears to show the moments right after the birth.

In the video, a fully clothed woman and a newborn baby were laying on a sidewalk with people gathering around to help. The birth happened near at the 900 block of Geary Street near Union Square, according to an Instagram post.

Don’t Do Drugs. The reality of drug use is tough and these images are strong, but necessary to show how destructive narcotics are to society.

The video shows the unidentified woman reach down between her legs to grab the crying baby covered by a white blanket on the concrete as people attempted to keep her calm.

"It's going to be ok, just relax," one person can be heard saying in the video. "Don't move, it's going to be fine. They are coming to pick you up."

SFFD said due to HIPPA privacy laws they are unable to comment further but confirmed "both patients were taken to the hospital in stable condition."

This should not happen. Things in our "society" need to drastically change. Addiction is an illness, and should be treated as such instead of marginalizing the individuals dealing with said illness. There is always innocents impacted by an untreated addict; this, is a prime example.

Babies born to moms who use street drugs during pregnancy can have these complications:

Premature birth. This is birth that happens too early, before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy.
Low birthweight. This is when a baby is born weighing less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces.
Smaller-than-normal head size (called reduced head circumference)
Heart defects
Birth defects. These are health conditions that are present at birth. Birth defects change the shape or function of one or more parts of the body. They can cause problems in overall health, how the body develops, or in how the body works.
Infections, including hepatitis C, HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and Zika. These viruses often affect people who share needles when they use street drugs. Moms can pass these infections to their baby during pregnancy or at birth. If you get infected with the Zika virus during pregnancy, it can cause a birth defect called microcephaly and other brain problems.
Neonatal abstinence syndrome (also called NAS). This is a group of health conditions that a baby can have if his mother uses addictive drugs during pregnancy. NAS can happen when a baby is exposed to a drug before birth and then goes through drug withdrawal after birth.
Babies born to moms who use drugs often have problems later in life, including:

Learning and behavior problems
Slower-than-normal growth
Sudden infant death syndrome (also called SIDS). This is the unexplained death of a child while sleeping.
