Different Way to Treat the Insane.
I just finished reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I decided to hunt down some pictures of this treatment. I am totally obsessed with old asylums and former "insanity" treatments, shock therapies, (insulin, water, electric) and lobotomies. I found some pictures, both of lobotomies and of shock therapy. I think the fact that most are black and white and that they were all considered incredible modern treatment at the time make them all the more horrible. I hope you enjoy!! Oh, before I forget i'll put up some wiki articles on all of the above mentioned surgeries just to give you some background information. Lobotomy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobotomy Electro Shock Therapy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro-shock_therapy Insulin Shock Therapy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin_shock_therapy Now, onto the pictures!! |

Re: Different Way to Treat the Insane.
The last picture is of a gentleman by the name of Howard. He was featured in an article about surviving lobotomies. That is his after picture, from having an "icepick" lobotomy. He still suffers from the effects of it.

Re: Different Way to Treat the Insane.
i live near a very old insane asylum (now Mental Health Institute whcih MOSTLY houses "troubled teens") and theyve got a museum in their attic. They have all kinds of old equipment they used there. theres also sketches of some of the equipment they used, like a tub they would fill with water and make the person stay inside for long periods of time, with a tarp over it, just allowing for their head to poke out. a REALLY weird one was this box they had to sit in, which spun around, and they were made to MASTURBATE in it... i for the life of me can't remember WHAT that was supposed to treat... |
