Dermatillomanie (my Photos)
Dermatillomanie (also known as compulsive skin picking or CSP) is an impulse control disorder characterized by the repeated urge to pick at one’s own skin, often to the extent that damage is caused. Dermatillomania can be a compulsion of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). People afflicted with dermatillomania find skin picking to be stress relieving or gratifying, though it can still be as physically painful as it would be for a non-skin picker. I have suffered from severe anxiety and Derma for upwards of seven years, and it has made me extremely self conscious about my arms and back. I often don't even realize i am scratching or picking unless my mom points it out. Up until recently, I wasn't even aware that what i was doing was an actual medical disorder, I thought it was a nervous habit i had developed because of my anxiety. |

Re: Dermatillomanie (my Photos)
I think most people are prone to do a bit (or a lot) of picking at their skin. Sometimes it gets carried away, like in your case, where you rely on the pain a bit to remind you that you have feelings (my own experience) as well it gives you sort of a trancelike space to be in where little thought is required, the focus becomes day dream like and the issues that cause anxiety tend to fade away for awhile. I feel really badly for you honey, it does cause permanent damage and I know it's easy to say "I'll just not do it again" but like any other habit, it's very difficult to stop. I hope maybe you'll try some exfoliation scrubs, pick out some scents that appeal to you. Make your de-stress time during shower or bathing and use the exfoliants to do almost the same thing as the picking is doing. You'll be less likely to pick, as the scrub will lighten any scabbing that may exist, you'll feel relaxed and you may be surprised to find you can enter that same anxiety free zone doing something that will improve the health and appearance of your skin. Good luck darling. |

Re: Dermatillomanie (my Photos)
I used to bite my nails when I was very young. When I got rid of that habit, I developed a huge urge to pick the skin surrounding my nails. It sucks and I don't want people to look at my hands. |
