Probably because they need to see how the patient reacts to the procedure. If the structures don't get back in place properly, the patient will express it through pain. If they sedate him there's no certain way to know if the procedure was successful. Keep in mind that is is commonly done to fix dislocations. That's as far as my medical student logic goes so far.
