This was caused by a DOG ! Damn dogs defecate and walk off, and the filth is full of worm eggs. Each egg can grow into a large cyst with thousands of larvae in it. The cyst is a transparent sphere with fluid like salt water distending it. In man, the cyst can not continue the species: man is OUT of the food chain. The cyst has to be eaten by a wolf for the larvae to mature. Usually the cyst grows in the liver, which usually accomodates it. This is likely a secondary cyst, grown from worm tissue from a ruptured liver cyst. Eventually the cyst deteriorates, unless the host dies or the cyst is destroyed. The fluid gels and finally the cyst collapses into a lump of inert matter. This is the species Echinococcus Granulosis. More to be feared is E. Multilocaris, also carried by wolves & dogs. This grows into a cancerous mass that destroys the liver by invasion and tissue destruction. It finds man an unsuitable host, but keeps growing at the perimeter, tho no larvae are produced and the interior becomes necrotic and full of rubbish. It is hard to remove surgically unlike the well-defined granulosis, but can be destroyed by mebendazole. I made a long study of this parasite which is the most hateful life-form produced by so-called "intelligent design". Iceland had a real problem until by killing stray dogs, keeping dogs away from abattoir waste and other measures, the parasite was extirpated. |
