Re: Bitten by a Belgian Malinois

Wow, that's intense. I hope you continue to recover.

I just wanted to say that I think it's really great that you kept the dog, and that you understood all the training and conditioning the dog had had and the impact that it must have had on him. I think a lot of dog owners would have been quick to get rid of the dog. Good on you, I hope he doesn't bite you or anyone again though!
Yes, we had a lot of people telling us to put him down but we could not. In response to some other comments, yes, this was my error in judgement and I was lucky it was not my throat. When I my husband left police work he was gone a lot. I felt safer with him around and would only bring him out inside the house when the kids were in bed. My husband taught me the commands but said over and over he would never be a 'pet'. I stupidly thought I was the fucking dog whisperer or something and began letting him inside freely more and more when my husband was not there. This was a warning bite really because if he went after me like he was trained or toward people in a bite suit I would have been seriously fucked up like some of the mangled messes we see on here. It was not my brightest decision.
That being said I still work with him and play with him every day (outside) although very early in the morning so no neighbors are out and when the kids are still asleep. He listens to me and I know he loves me. I just never forget what he can do.

That dog would never be in my home.

Wait, why do the neighbors have to not be out? Do you not have this dog in a securely fenced in area/yard?

Re: Bitten by a Belgian Malinois

It's really sad...those dogs work so hard and significantly shorten their lives for what we ask them to do for us. I'm so sorry that you were injured...I think your heart is in the right place for keeping him with your family. Old police dogs and old police officers...two groups probably too screwed up that we shouldn't be allowed back into "normal" society. They hand select both the dogs and officers, pay thousands of dollars in training, train them to a razor with deadly skills, work them in such a highly stressful environment that they significantly shorten their lives, then when they retire they've seen too much and are just too weird and dangerous that no one wants them anymore, and if they do get adopted...everyone freaks out when they get stressed and occasionally bite someone. I can totally sympathize with your dog...I'm sure my wife has contemplated putting me to sleep on occasion.

Malinois look sort of like German Shepherds right?

He is in a secure area with a cyclone fence and we are protected somewhat in our county because police and working dogs are exempt from any dog restrictions. But these dogs can jump and my kids could come outside so I just do it early before I run. He is really way too old to be jumping but he has jumped on top of the trampoline and in one of those 3 foot pools they sell at Wal Mart going after his ball.

This is actually our second one. The first was so sweet she did not have the nature to really be a K-9. She was great at tracking and finding dope but would only bite when someone had a suit on. This one is a little different. The training and stress is brutal. What cops in general endure on a daily basis is awful. In our case it was administration and politics that pretty much ended a great LE career.
I am glad your wife has not put you down yet

Re: Bitten by a Belgian Malinois

The lady was lucky, she's not lost fingers
This Belgian Malionis looks like a mixed german shepard and a greyhound to me
These police dogs are dangerous and require attention
My family had a retired police dog many years ago, the dog jumps trough around 1.80 meter high walls without any problem

Re: Bitten by a Belgian Malinois

Hate vicious big dogs, some dogs are too feral and should have never been mixed with humans in the first place, some are owned by irresponsible owners and some are taught to attack. I will never understand why people chose to have them as pets. It only takes an innocent child getting mauled then owners decide to get rid. Wise up people!
